About Us

Our Story

We believe patients deserve better medicines. Our mission is to help biotech, venture capitalists and pharma improve their pipeline investments using human genetics.

Approximately 95% of drug development programs fail—most often because the drug’s target is not causal. We and others have recognized that human genetics is the most efficient way to reliably identify causal drug targets.

Drug development programs supported by human genetics are 2-4-fold more likely to reach the market. Because of this, large pharma often refuse to fund drug development programs unless they are strongly supported by human genetic evidence.

We are academics who have worked for 16 years generating, analyzing and critiquing human genetic evidence. We launched 5 Prime Sciences to provide these services to biotech, venture capitalists and pharmaceutical companies.

To do so we are committed to standing on the forefront of advances in human genetics, bioinformatics, clinical medicine and AI to deliver better medicines to our patients.

Kevin Heyries, PhD

Business Strategy Advisor

Dr Heyries is advising 5 Prime Sciences on company growth, business development, deal making and strategy matters. Dr Heyries is a consultant for biotech, biopharma and venture groups and was a cofounder at AbCellera, leading business development and innovation activities.

Sahir 2

Sahir Bhatnagar, PhD

Director of Statistical Genetics

With a PhD in Biostatistics, Sahir has worked in both academia and biotech. He was previously an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health, as well as Diagnostic Radiology at McGill University. He then transitioned to a role as a Senior Research Scientist on the target identification team at Deep Genomics where he played a pivotal role in identifying drug targets using whole genome sequencing data. He is a proponent of open-source software and has authored several R packages which have been downloaded over 200k times. Sahir’s guiding principle is that the bio should always come before the statistics. After all, it’s the biological question that drives his innovative methodological contributions, from fine-mapping and genetic risk prediction to gene-environment interaction modeling.
